The Cloud is Here to Stay

Advancements and changes in technology are occurring all of the time and one good indicator of how well a new technology will fare in the marketplace is its rate of adoption.  Obviously the more businesses and organizations that find value in a new piece of technology and are willing to make investments in that technology, the more likely that technology will have longevity and usefulness in the market.  Today we are focusing on some indicators of one of the most talked about disruptive technologies currently infiltrating the realm of Information Technology (IT): cloud computing.

Karl Flinders recently shared an article on ComputerWeekly.com that discussed some interesting trends in cloud computing service usage.  Recent research from an IT outsourcing consultancy firm found that cloud computing service contracts have tripled over the past three years, from 2010 to the present.   And as we discussed in our article last week, Gartner’s Top Technology Trends for 2012, the well respected information technology research and advisory organization, Gartner Inc., predicts that the use of cloud computing will continue to grow in 2013 and beyond.

Technological analysts predict that the greatest area of growth in cloud computing will be in the software as a service, or SaaS.  This growth potential is seen particularly in the areas of human resource applications, customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.   That is not to say that the cloud computing areas of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) will not experience growth in the upcoming years as well.  In another recent article on our blog, Predicting the Future by Examining the PaaS, we discussed predictions by Garter Inc. regarding PaaS.  Gartner predicts tremendous growth in PaaS over the next few years as more and more providers refine their PaaS offerings.  Take a look at our article about the future of PaaS if you would like to read all of the details of Gartner’s predictions.  One technological analyst, Stanton Jones, describes the future of cloud computing in general in a positive light:

“Clearly, cloud is a disruptive trend in the enterprise and we predict this disruption will not only continue, but accelerate, especially for the traditional IT service providers.”

As 2012 wraps up, we are sure to see more and more analysis of the cloud market and predictions about the future of cloud computing.  Based on what has been reported so far, it is safe to assume that this is one disruptive technology that is here to stay.
